Selena Gomez breaks silence on ‘Emilia Pérez’ co-star’s offensive posts
Selena Gomez is speaking out as her film Emilia Pérez faces a PR crisis over past social media posts by co-star Karla Sofía Gascón.
During a Q&A at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Sunday, where she received the Virtuosos Award, the Golden Globe nominee acknowledged that the controversy has affected her emotions while the Netflix crime drama musical continues to win awards in Hollywood.
“I’m good. I’m really good,” said Gomez, 32. “Some of the magic has disappeared. But I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just grateful. I live with no regrets, and I would do this movie over and over again if I could.”
Her remarks follow director Jacques Audiard’s recent comments in a Feb. 5 Deadline interview, where he distanced himself from Gascón, calling her past social media posts “inexcusable” and stating he had not been in contact with her since they resurfaced. Gascón has since issued several public statements in response to the controversy over racist and xenophobic posts that an X user resurfaced in late January.
With final votes for the March 2 Academy Awards due on Feb. 18, Emilia Pérez remains a strong contender, leading with 13 nominations.
Gascón has apologized for her past remarks, which included comments about Muslim people, Oscars diversity, and George Floyd—some of which were allegedly posted as recently as 2020. However, she also criticized those who brought her past posts to light, saying, “They have achieved their objective, to stain my existence with lies or things taken out of context.”
