Former BBC newsreader Huw Edwards Has Admitted To Producing Indecent Images Of Children
The 62-year-old, who arrived at Westminster Magistrates’ Court wearing a dark blue suit, blue tie, and dark sunglasses, admitted to committing three offenses between December 2020 and April 2022.
He possessed 41 photographs on the messaging app WhatsApp, including seven category A images, 12 category B pictures, and 22 category C images.
The Metropolitan Police stated that he was arrested in November last year and charged on June 26.
According to the CPS, the term “making” can encompass opening, accessing, downloading, and storing content, or receiving an image via social media, even if unsolicited or part of a group.
Category A images are the most serious, involving penetrative sexual activity, sexual activity with an animal, or sadism. Category B images depict non-penetrative sexual activity.
Category C images do not fall into categories A or B and do not depict any sexual activity.
Edwards was one of the BBC’s most prominent and highest-paid presenters before he resigned in April.
He previously anchored the BBC’s News At Ten for 20 years and covered major national events, including announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II and reporting on her funeral.
Edwards was formerly the BBC’s highest-paid newsreader, earning between £475,000 and £479,999 for the year 2023/24. This included 160 presenting days, BBC One news specials, election specials, and other TV programming, according to the corporation’s latest annual report.
