GE HealthCare, MediView XR announce AR radiology suite OmnifyXR for clinical use
GE HealthCare and MediView XR, a med-tech company specializing in augmented reality, have announced the first successful clinical use of their jointly developed OmnifyXR Interventional Suite System.
OmnifyXR, which began co-development in 2022, integrates GE’s imaging technology with MediView’s AR and surgical navigation platform. This combination enhances physicians’ ability to assess patient anatomy, make more informed clinical decisions, and facilitate remote collaboration among care teams in different locations.
The platform enables doctors to display up to four video streams simultaneously, improving workflow efficiency. It also allows for interactive engagement with a 3D model of the patient’s anatomy to aid in procedural planning, as well as remote collaboration for consultation, training, or supervision.
Physicians can view imaging video streams as holographic displays, interact with the system hands-free via voice commands, and customize the size, angle, and orientation of the patient’s image.
Dr. Jafar Golzarian, a professor of radiology and founder of North Star Vascular and Interventional, utilized OmnifyXR in its first clinical application during two procedures: a prostate artery embolization and a genicular artery embolization.
“The heads-up display and augmented reality features of OmnifyXR, particularly the 3D anatomical view provided by the hologram scan, are revolutionary, offering new treatment perspectives we’ve never had before,” Golzarian said in a statement.
“I’m thrilled to be part of the team performing these inaugural cases and look forward to seeing how this technology could improve clinical and operational outcomes for both patients and clinicians.”
THE LARGER TREND
Last year, Ohio-based MediView XR received FDA 510(k) clearance for its augmented reality (AR) surgical navigation system, XR90. This system enables physicians to visualize a patient’s anatomical structures in 3D for both preoperative and intraoperative use.
In 2023, MediView XR secured $15 million in strategic funding, following a $9.9 million investment the previous year.
In 2022, MediView XR formed a know-how agreement with Mayo Clinic, through which the health system provided technology, clinical, and research expertise to help accelerate innovation and advance AR solutions for surgical procedures.
Other companies in the surgical extended reality field include Augmedics, known for its AR surgical navigation platform, and Osso VR, which specializes in virtual reality surgical training and assessment.
