Suspect in brutal Louisiana hammer attack on college student subject of ICE hold request
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry stated Monday that the attack on a college student by a man wielding a hammer is an example of why former President Donald Trump transferred some illegal immigrants to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Juan Monroy, 32, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder for allegedly assaulting a Nicholls State University student on Friday near St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Thibodaux, approximately 60 miles west of New Orleans.
Authorities described the attack as unprovoked and seemingly random.
According to the university, Monroy was swiftly apprehended thanks to the efforts of campus police and church staff. At the time of the incident, he was employed at a non-university job site adjacent to the campus, officials said.
The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, received medical treatment and was later released.
“Our primary concern is the well-being of our students,” said Nicholls President Jay Clune. “We appreciate the prompt response from Nicholls State University Police and the support of local agencies in this investigation.”
Monroy was taken into custody at the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex, where he is being held on a $500,000 bond. Additionally, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on him, the sheriff’s office told Fox News Digital.
“This is yet another senseless act of violence committed by someone who should not be in our country,” Landry said regarding the arrest. “Monsters like this are why the federal government is reopening Guantanamo Bay. We stand with our victims.”
