Ogun State Govt to register foreign workers, step up monitoring of scavengers over insecurity concerns
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has ordered all industries and companies operating within the state to immediately begin the registration and documentation of all foreign nationals in their workforce, as part of new security measures introduced following recent breaches.
The governor issued the directive in Iperu, Ikenne Local Government Area, after a strategic meeting with security chiefs. He assured residents that the state’s security framework has been reinforced, adding that authorities are also focusing on illegal mining sites, game reserves, and forested areas to root out criminal elements hiding there.
Abiodun revealed that about 70 foreigners, mostly from Niger Republic, Sudan and Chad, had been arrested in the last few days after failing to explain their presence in the state. “The law enforcement agencies have arrested within the last three to four days about 70 persons from Chad and Sudan who cannot even speak English and cannot explain what they are doing here. We are going to process these individuals with the Nigeria Immigration Service. We will also be calling on our non-indigene communities to be more vigilant so that we know who is here and why they are here,” he said.
The governor also raised concerns about scavengers, saying their activities now pose a significant threat. “We discussed the issue of scavengers who have become more of a threat. Law enforcement agencies will pay particular attention to them. We will engage them to ensure they are not being used to perpetrate crimes in the state,” he added.
