Mother and Son K!lled by Suspected Drunk Driver Set for Burial in Akwa Ibom

A well-known roadside ‘akara’ seller and her son, who lost their lives in a fatal auto crash, will be laid to rest on Friday, September 19, in Akwa Ibom State.

Mrs. Justina Sunday Udofia, fondly called Mma Akara, her son, and five others died in the accident at the busy roundabout linking Ring Road 3 and Stadium Road at Nung Oku Junction, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.

According to eyewitnesses, the crash occurred a few weeks ago when a Toyota Corolla lost control, veered off the road, and ploughed into bystanders waiting for commercial vehicles along with roadside traders

“The fatal car accident has claimed several lives, including a well-known roadside hawker, popularly called Mma Akara. “Mma Akara, was loved by many for selling akara late into the night at Nung Oku junction. She lost her life on Friday night when a Toyota Corolla veered off the road, crashed, and somersaulted The crash happened so sudden and leaving no chance for nearby traders and passers-by to escape,” an eyewitness Imaobong Udoh, a pear hawker lamented.
One Thompson Thompson, who announced the burial arrangements in a Facebook post on Thursday said the driver of the Toyota Corolla was drunk.
“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we @ PATMOS FELLOWSHIP extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Mrs. Justina Sunday Udofia, popularly known as MMA AKARA,” he wrote.
MMA AKARA and her precious little boy, whose lives were tragically cut short recently by a senseless drunk driver at Nung Oku junction in the outskirts of Uyo.
This sudden and devastating loss is felt deeply across the Church, community etc MMA AKARA was not only a popular and passionate personality but also a loving mother whose presence brought strength, warmth, and inspiration to many. Her son, so young and full of promise, was taken far too soon.
As they will be laid to rest tomorrow, the 19th of September, 2025, in INI Local Government Area, we pray that the Lord, in His infinite mercy, grants their souls eternal rest. May God comfort all who mourn, especially the surviving family, with the strength to endure this painful time. May their memories live on in the hearts of those they touched, and may justice be served in due time. Rest in peace, mma Akara and son.
