Anambra Governor Soludo Outlines Conditions for Release of Detained Native Doctors
Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has outlined the conditions under which he may consider releasing prominent native doctors currently on trial in the state.
The detainees include Chigozie Nwangu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki of Oba, Eke Hit of Okija, and Onyeze Jesus of Nkpor. They were arrested in February on charges of promoting fraudulent get-rich-quick schemes, preparing charms for suspected criminals, and misleading young people with promises of wealth without legitimate work.
During a visit to Oba, Nwangu’s hometown, Governor Soludo was met by local youths who pleaded for the release of the detained native doctor, describing him as a vital figure in their community.
In his response, Governor Soludo acknowledged the appeal but firmly emphasized that the matter is now a judicial process and beyond his unilateral control. He clarified that for him to intervene, the full legal proceedings must first conclude.
“You are asking for the release of Akwa Okuko, but I want to say that there is a process,” Soludo stated. “There is a process for me to follow, and there is a process for the court to follow too. Where we are now is the process of the court.”
The Governor explained that the fastest path forward is to pray for a speedy trial. He added that only after the judicial process is concluded, and if the individuals are found guilty and convicted, community leaders approach can then him to discuss the possibility of a pardon. Until that time, he noted, his hands are tied.
