Governor Eno bans masquerade display in Akwa Ibom
Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has imposed an indefinite ban on masquerade displays, citing rising attacks by criminals who hide under the guise of traditional performances.
Speaking at a state event, the governor said the decision became necessary after several violent incidents involving individuals disguising themselves as masquerades to terrorize communities.
“By my office as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, I’m issuing an order. Anyone caught will be arrested and tried. They have been using it to cause trouble in some local government areas,” he said.
He directed security agencies to enforce the ban strictly, adding, “As the Chief Security Officer of the state, I am directing the Commissioner of Police and other security heads to arrest and prosecute anyone caught.”
The governor urged residents to prioritise peace and resist any activities that endanger public safety. “Let’s stop terrorising people. Let people have peace. All those I see when we’re driving, please let it be said it is hereby banned. No more,” he added.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has in recent weeks raised concerns over what it described as “suspected criminal masquerades,” with Commissioner of Police Baba Azare confirming that several suspects have already been arrested and are currently facing prosecution.
