Cultists Attack Funeral in Anambra, Kill Four Mourners
The Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for suspected cultists who attacked mourners during a burial in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, killing at least four people and injuring about 15 others.
The incident happened late Thursday during the funeral rites of an 18-year-old boy in Ezi Village. Witnesses said the assailants stormed the compound on motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately, forcing mourners to flee in panic.
“They came suddenly and started shooting at everyone,” an eyewitness recounted, noting that the attackers sped off immediately after the assault.
Sources suggested the attack may have been linked to cult rivalry, describing it as a possible revenge mission. “Friends of the deceased had gathered for a wake, and while some were entertaining themselves, the gunmen struck. Many were shot, and several bodies were later taken to the morgue,” one source said.
While community members alleged more than eight people were killed, police confirmed four fatalities.
Police spokesman DSP Tochukwu Ikenga said in a statement that investigations had begun to identify and apprehend those responsible. He noted that preliminary findings pointed to a clash between rival cult groups.
Ikenga assured the public that the command was committed to restoring order and urged residents to provide information that could assist the investigation.
