Prominent South African lawyer gunned down just days after receiving chilling threats to withdraw from high-profile case

Respected South African Lawyer Bouwer van Niekerk Assassinated After Threats to Quit High-Profile Case

Bouwer van Niekerk, a renowned insolvency lawyer, was brutally assassinated in Johannesburg on Friday morning, September 5, 2025.

The 43-year-old attorney was shot inside the boardroom of Smit Sew Attorneys and Conveyancers in Saxonwold in what authorities believe was a targeted attack.

Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi revealed that two men posing as potential clients booked an appointment to gain access to Van Niekerk’s office on Avonwold Road. Gunshots rang out shortly after they were ushered into the boardroom, and the suspects fled immediately.

Van Niekerk was confirmed d£ad at the scene, with no personal belongings stolen, underscoring suspicions of a deliberate hit. Police say they are pursuing four suspects, with investigations ongoing.

Widely respected in South Africa’s legal community, Van Niekerk had worked on several high-profile cases, including the business rescue of Gupta-linked companies and an alleged billion-rand Ponzi scheme.

Shockingly, just days before his assassination, he had reportedly received a chilling ultimatum to withdraw from the Ponzi scheme case or face severe consequences.

His murder has sparked outrage and heightened fears over the growing risks faced by legal professionals tackling organised crime and corruption in South Africa.

His parents told News24 that Van Niekerk refused to bow to intimidation, driven by a steadfast commitment to fighting corruption.
The South African Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners Association (SARIPA) expressed “deep shock and outrage” at the murder, with chairperson Jo Mitchell-Marais calling it an assault on the judicial system.
“Our members must work without fear or violence,” she said.
Ian Cameron, chairperson of the parliamentary portfolio committee on police, echoed this sentiment, stating, “When lawyers and investigators are targeted, it is likely justice itself that is being attacked.”

Van Niekerk had previously spoken out about the unresolved murders of whistleblower Babita Deokaran and insolvency practitioners Cloete and Thomas Murray, warning of a “terrifying message” to the legal profession.
His own killing has intensified calls for decisive action to protect those challenging powerful criminal networks.
The legal community mourns the loss of a courageous professional, with fears growing that justice in South Africa is increasingly under threat.

It was gathered that late Van Niekerk himself warned that the assassinations of one of South Africa’s leading insolvency practitioners, Cloete Murray, had sent a “terrifying message” to the legal profession.
Cloete Murray was central to investigations into Gupta-linked companies and other state capture entities.
In 2023, he and his son Thomas were gunned down in a calculated attack in Pretoria. Thomas died instantly, and Cloete later succumbed to his injuries.
His own k!lling now deepens the fear that those who hold powerful networks accountable are being systematically targeted.
