Politicians, Not IPOB, Behind Rising Cultism in South East — Human Rights Lawyer Chidi Odinkalu Claims
Human rights lawyer, Chidi Odinkalu, has accused politicians of fueling insecurity and sponsoring cult activities in Nigeria’s South East region.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, October 23, Odinkalu dismissed claims that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are solely responsible for the region’s insecurity.
While acknowledging that separatist agitations have played a part, Odinkalu argued that it is “ridiculous” to attribute every act of violence in the South East to IPOB, insisting that political actors bear greater responsibility for the crisis.
He said: “Let me tell you this, the biggest single issue, in security terms, confronting the South-East, in my estimation, based on the work I have done on this, is, I regret to disappoint you, not IPOB, it is one word: cults, financed by politicians.
“All right? Now, the cults are the biggest single issue, and you don’t have a clue how terrible the problem of cults in the South-East is at this particular time.”
