The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old truck driver and two accomplices for allegedly staging his own kidnap in an attempt to extort money from his family.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, December 11, 2025, noting that the case was reported after a citizen informed the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad that the driver, Tobi Oluwatuyi, had been abducted at Ilu Abo in Akure North LGA.
Police operatives immediately launched an investigation, but preliminary findings revealed that the supposed victim had faked his abduction.
According to the PPRO, Oluwatuyi conspired with two others — Jubril Abu, 20, and Segun Oluwatuyi, 21 — to demand a N1.5 million ransom from his family.
Believing the abduction to be real, the family reportedly paid the ransom into one of the suspects’ accounts, after which detectives traced the payment to him.
Further investigation confirmed the plot, and all three suspects have reportedly confessed to the crime.
