“Mob Sets Woman Ablaze in Niger State Over Alleged Blasphemy”
Niger State was thrown into turmoil on Saturday evening when a woman identified as Amaye, a local food vendor, was lynched and set ablaze by a mob over alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.
The incident took place in the Kasuwar-Garba community, Mariga Local Government Area, according to SaharaReporters.
Witnesses said the confrontation began after one of Amaye’s customers made a remark about marriage that referenced the Prophet. Her response, perceived by some as blasphemous, quickly escalated tensions.
Although she was initially taken into police custody for questioning, the mob reportedly overpowered the security operatives, seized her, and set her on fire.
Confirming the incident, Chairman of Mariga Local Government, Abbas Adamu Kasuwar-Garba, stated that calm had been restored in the community.
Police spokesperson in the state, SP Wasiu Abiodun, also confirmed the development, noting that the command received the report around 2:00 p.m. on Saturday regarding the alleged blasphemous remarks.
“Before additional reinforcements could be deployed, the crowd overpowered our officers, whisked her away, and set her ablaze,” he said. Abiodun added that investigations are ongoing and those found culpable will be brought to justice.
