Lagos mourns loss of another female council official

Lagos State Government and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been thrown into mourning yet again following the death of another female local government official — the fifth in just two months.

The deceased, Mrs. Adebimpe Akintola, was the Council Manager of Coker Aguda Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and Chairman of the Forum of Council Managers in Lagos State. She reportedly passed away on Monday, September 29, 2025, after a brief illness.

Council Managers serve as the administrative heads of the 20 local governments and 37 LCDAs across the state, acting as accounting officers and overseeing daily administration.

Announcing her passing in a statement on Tuesday, the Forum of Council Managers said:“With total submission to the will of Allah, we announce the passing of our dear Chairman, Mrs. Adebimpe Akintola, this afternoon, Monday, September 29, 2025. She was the Council Manager of Coker/Aguda LCDA until her death.”

She will be buried in line with Islamic rites on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, with Janazah prayers at Al Kitab Mosque, Abosede Onamade Street, Eleshin, after the Zuhr prayer at 1:00 p.m., followed by interment at the Equitable CDA Muslim Cemetery, Igbe Lara, at 2:00 p.m.

Her death adds to a string of losses among female council officials since the July 27, 2025, inauguration of the current local administration in Lagos. Those who died earlier include Mrs. Oluwakemi Rufai, Councillor for Ward C in Ibeju Lekki (August 13), Mrs. Zainab Shotayo, Councillor for Ward C in Odiolowo-Ojuwoye (August 18), Princess Oluremi Ajose, Vice Chairman of Badagry West LCDA (September 20), and Mrs. Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan, Councillor for Ward F in Somolu (September 21).

Reacting on Tuesday, Lagos APC spokesman Seye Oladejo described Akintola’s passing as “another sad incident.” He said: “APC received with deep shock and sadness the news of the passing of Mrs. Adebimpe Akintola, the Council Manager of Coker Aguda Local Council Development Area, on Monday, September 29, 2025. Her death, coming at a time when the state is still mourning the loss of other distinguished female local government officials in quick succession, is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the vacuum left behind in public service. Mrs. Adebimpe Akintola was a committed administrator, a diligent public servant, and a dependable support in grassroots governance whose contributions to the development of her council area will be sorely missed.”

He extended condolences to her family, the people of Coker Aguda LCDA, the Lagos State Local Government Service Commission, and colleagues across the state’s local government system.
