A quiet Sunday morning turned into a scene straight out of a crime thriller after five men were arrested near a major RAF base in Gloucestershire.
Things took a dramatic turn near RAF Fairford on Sunday after police swooped on five men suspected of involvement in a possible terrorist plot. And just when the situation was already raising eyebrows, US President Donald Trump weighed in with some striking comments.
Speaking to reporters, Trump claimed the men had been under surveillance for some time and were allegedly planning to cause “big damage” at the base.
“It was fantastic. Working with Britain, it was an amazing job,” he said, praising the cooperation between US and British authorities.
But while Trump was offering his take from across the Atlantic, residents near the base were dealing with a frightening situation much closer to home.
A Local Resident’s Late-Night Discovery
In a twist that sounds almost too cinematic to be real, a local woman reportedly stumbled upon a suspicious scene while driving home in the early hours of Sunday.
According to her account, three vans were blocking the road, while a group of around 10 men—some allegedly wearing hoods and balaclavas—were gathered nearby.
Concerned by what she was seeing, she called 999.
Police reportedly arrived around 15 minutes later, and the woman later suggested that her unexpected appearance may have disrupted whatever was happening.
For someone simply trying to get home, it must have been an unsettling experience.
Police Move In as Homes Are Evacuated
The incident quickly escalated, with armed officers making arrests in the Whelford area.
The five men were initially arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act and were subsequently arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.
Authorities declared a major incident, while emergency crews established a cordon around the area.
And the response didn’t stop there.
Around 85 households near RAF Fairford were evacuated as a precaution, leaving residents facing an unexpected and undoubtedly stressful disruption to their Sunday.
Bomb disposal robots were also deployed to inspect three suspicious white vans. Aerial footage reportedly showed two of the vehicles with their rear doors open, while several large black barrels appeared to be scattered nearby.
It was the kind of scene that would leave anyone living in the area wondering what was happening—and whether it was safe to return home.

RAF Fairford is used by the United States Air Force, making the incident a matter of interest on both sides of the Atlantic.
