Police warn against planned protest over Kebbi schoolgirls’ abduction
The Kebbi State Police Command has raised concern over intelligence reports suggesting that some groups and non-governmental organisations are planning to stage a protest over the recent abduction of schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga.
In a statement released on Friday, November 21, the Command’s spokesperson, Nafiu Abubakar, urged organisers to cancel the planned demonstration, warning that the state’s current security situation is “too fragile” to withstand any public unrest. He cautioned that such a protest could escalate tensions and potentially result in violence.
Acknowledging the deep grief and anger sparked by the abduction, the police described the proposed protest as “misguided and counterproductive,” stressing that it could undermine ongoing, sensitive rescue operations aimed at safely recovering the kidnapped schoolgirls.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and property, stressing that maintaining peace and stability remains their top priority. They urged residents to assist ongoing operations by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
The concerns come days after armed men stormed the school in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area, killing the Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, before abducting dozens of students. Witnesses said the attackers met no resistance, sparking widespread fear and mourning across the region.
Makuku was reportedly shot while trying to protect his students during the attack. Community members have since offered prayers for him, asking Allah to grant him mercy and comfort his family after the tragic loss.
