Lagos college provost jailed three years for forgery
A Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced Samson Orijugo, provost of Adonai Advanced Institute of Management, to three years’ imprisonment for forging an official document of Lagos State University (LASU).
Justice Modupe Nico-Clay convicted Orijugo after finding that he forged a LASU notification of result to falsely present his institution as being affiliated with the university. The court ruled that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Evidence showed that the forged document, bearing LASU letterhead, was issued to a former student, John Chibuzor Okoro, following Orijugo’s alleged misrepresentation of Adonai Institute as a LASU-affiliated institution.
Evidence before the court confirmed that no such affiliation existed.
In delivering judgment, the judge dismissed Orijugo’s defence, ruling that the offence centred on forgery, not the issuance of a degree certificate. She held that Orijugo knowingly presented the document as genuine to deceive the student and his family.
Orijugo was convicted on two counts of forgery and sentenced accordingly.
