Fake soldier nabbed in Ogun
Operatives of the SWAT Unit of the Ogun State Police Command on Monday, November 17, rescued a man impersonating a soldier from an irate mob at the Olomore area of Abeokuta.
The rescue followed a distress alert picked up by the Command’s Cyber Centre, indicating that a man dressed in full military camouflage had been surrounded by a crowd and was moments away from being lynched. SWAT operatives immediately moved to the scene, and the mob dispersed upon their arrival, allowing officers to safely extract the suspect.
Further open-source intelligence identified the suspect as 31-year-old Robinson Godday, who had allegedly snatched two mobile phones from a young man in the area. His escape attempt was thwarted by the crowd, who descended on him, leaving him with an injury to his right leg. The stolen phones were recovered by the mob and returned to their owner.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect confessed that he was not a military officer, admitting that he had stolen the military uniform from a soldier serving at the Ojo Military Barracks, Lagos, who is currently deployed on operations in the North-East.
Following this report, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, who frowned at street justice directed intensified raids, stop-and-search operations be augmented in the Olomore axis to forestall a recurrence of similar incidents. The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue to unravel the full extent of his activities and identify possible accomplices.
