Wellth expands AI personalized predictive features for blood pressure
Wellth, a digital health startup, is introducing a suite of personalized, predictive health features within its app to address key factors contributing to chronic health conditions like high blood pressure.
The company partners with insurers, healthcare providers, and employers to offer an app that encourages daily health habits such as taking medications or checking blood glucose levels. Users receive small financial rewards by uploading photos as proof of completing these tasks.
Wellth’s services cover a range of conditions, including mental health disorders, cardiovascular disease, heart failure, diabetes, cancer, chronic kidney disease, and respiratory conditions like COPD or asthma.
The startup’s new features leverage its proprietary AI model to deliver personalized health alerts when a patient’s blood pressure exceeds the target range set in collaboration with their healthcare provider.
Based in California, Wellth trained its AI model using blood pressure data collected from user-submitted photos. This data-driven approach enables the platform to offer tailored insights into patients’ health trends.
“With millions of pictures of blood pressure readings coming in, we can extract data directly from these images, allowing us to track trends and take a holistic approach to improving individual health outcomes, particularly around blood pressure,” said Matt Loper, cofounder and CEO of Wellth, in an interview with MobiHealthNews.
“We see what medications patients are taking daily and how their blood pressure changes over time. This enables us to provide more precise, personalized recommendations based on a comprehensive view of their health and care plan adherence,” Loper explained.
Wellth primarily operates within the Medicare Advantage and Medicaid sectors, supporting both healthcare providers who manage high-acuity Medicare patients requiring close monitoring and Medicare Advantage plans aiming to improve care quality while controlling costs.
“Quality scores and Medicare Star Ratings are central to measuring care quality, and blood pressure control is a critical metric for these ratings,” Loper noted.
“The goal is to help high-risk members with elevated blood pressure—who face increased risks of heart attacks, strokes, and hospitalizations—become more consistent with taking medications and tracking health metrics. This can reduce costly hospital admissions while boosting Star Ratings and overall care quality,” he added.
Looking ahead, Wellth plans to expand its AI capabilities by introducing blood sugar monitoring and advanced pill detection features.
THE LARGER TREND
Wellth’s latest updates follow its $20 million Series B funding round secured last year, led by SignalFire, with participation from former Evolent Health CEO Frank Williams and existing investors including the Social Entrepreneurs’ Fund, CD Venture, Yabeo, and the Partnership Fund for NYC.
Over the past year, Wellth partnered with Western Massachusetts Health New England, a not-for-profit health plan offering commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid coverage.
Additionally, California’s Gold Coast Health Plan (GCHP), the Medi-Cal health plan for Ventura County, announced last year that its members would gain access to Wellth’s services.
Previously, Wellth raised $10 million in a Series A funding round in 2020 and secured $5.1 million in seed funding in 2018.
The Power of AI-Driven Personalization
Wellth recently unveiled a new suite of AI-powered features designed to provide personalized health alerts. By analyzing millions of blood pressure readings submitted by users, Wellth’s proprietary AI model detects trends and sends alerts when a patient’s blood pressure exceeds their target range, as determined with their healthcare provider.
“Our AI model allows us to extract data directly from user-submitted images and identify patterns over time,” says Matt Loper, cofounder and CEO of Wellth. “This enables us to deliver tailored recommendations and support that improve health outcomes.”
Partnering for Impact
The company collaborates with insurers, healthcare providers, and employers to ensure its services reach those who need them most. The company has established partnerships with organizations like Western Massachusetts Health New England and California’s Gold Coast Health Plan (GCHP), which now offers Wellth’s services to its Medi-Cal members.
Operating in the Medicare Advantage and Medicaid sectors, the organization helps providers serving high-risk Medicare members improve care quality while reducing costs. Blood pressure control, a key metric for Medicare Star Ratings, is one area where Wellth is driving significant improvements.
